Helping Neptune Go Green

MARCH 23, 2021

You might well have heard of Neptune before. They’re a British interiors and lifestyle brand who make kitchens, furniture and accessories for the whole home, and who have over 30 stores across the UK and Europe. But here’s something you might not know – Neptune is on a mission to reduce their environmental impact.

Cactus Energy recently designed and installed a 200 kW solar panel system (that’s around 600 solar panels) on Neptune’s HQ in Wiltshire. The 80,000 sq ft building is home to their office and warehouse as well as a showroom and workshops. Neptune’s new renewable energy system will generate almost 200,000 kWh of green electricity per annum, offsetting over 42 tonnes of CO2 every year! But that’s not all they’re doing. We had a catch up with their Sustainability Lead, Kit Elmes, to find out more…

What does sustainability mean to Neptune?

We look at sustainability from a three-pronged approach, which involves balancing social, environmental and financial factors. From an environmental perspective, reducing emissions and protecting biodiversity is really important to us.

Why did you decide to go renewable?

Sustainability has always been a core part of our brand, especially when it comes to the materials we use in our furniture and how everything is made to last for generations. But we knew we could go further so we recently assessed everything we do here in the UK and used a gap analysis to see where the best opportunities for reducing our environmental impact could be. We found that generating our own renewable electricity was one of the most impactful ways to cut our carbon footprint.

"The service provided by Cactus Energy was proactive and accommodating. You made the whole process as straightforward as possible!"

Why did you choose Cactus Energy?

When choosing a supplier, we researched many other renewable energy companies and received several quotes for our project. Cactus Energy provided the most thorough system, one which maximised the energy generation potential of our roof space. But still for a reasonable rate. The fact that Cactus Energy offsets its own emissions via tree-planting in the UK was also a huge selling point. As a commercial customer looking to improve our sustainability as much as possible, we were really impressed with that initiative.

How did you find the installation process?

Very smooth! The service delivered by Cactus Energy was proactive and accommodating. You always ensured arrangements were made within the desired timeframe and made the whole process as straightforward as possible. It was really helpful to have a designated Project Manager who was always on hand, as there are lots of moving parts with a project like this.

Is there anything you are particularly pleased with?

We are really happy with the drone footage you provided. It’s great to be able to see our installation at different stages! This will also be helpful for our brand communications and in raising awareness of the project.

What other sustainable changes has Neptune made?

We’ve had a really good year and introduced quite a few initiatives to reduce our environmental impact. As well as powering our whole estate with renewable electricity, we’ve moved to LED and motion sensor lighting in our warehouse and showroom to reduce energy consumption. We’ve installed electric vehicle chargepoints for our customers and employees, and we’re hoping to eventually transition to a fully electric fleet.

We have also launched a plant-based café brand – ‘The Provenist’. It focuses on adding excitement to plant-based food but in a realistic way, using local produce and while supporting local brands and farms. Wherever a branch is set up, we try to connect with suppliers within a 50-mile radius.

It’s so encouraging to work with large businesses who are taking sustainability seriously. Cactus Energy is looking forward to supporting Neptune on their ongoing sustainability journey.

PS – We’ve had a peak at The Provenist menu and it sounds delicious. Check it out here or try their dishes for yourself next time you’re passing Neptune’s Bath store!
